Installing The Sims 1 for Windows 10

by Heather Castillo

  1. Install your Sims 1 Game from CDs may not work because some computers don't even have CD/DVD on them anymore. Assuming that you have the CDs and you still can't install, you can find a The Sims Complete Collection online for installation. I have installed mine both ways. Had to insert my fourth CD four times before it would actually install though.
  2. Install to C:\Program Files (x86)\Maxis\The Sims folder (default).
  3. After Installing:
backup the original Sims.exe file. (Just change the name of it to something like Sims_Original.exe or something.

Find the NoCD crack online, if you can't run with your CDs. This is a Sims.exe file that replaces your original in the The Sims folder. It is the UK version though and can cause some hinky little issues, like some CC and Maxis creations may not have the right name and description.
  4. Now you need to create a shortcut file. The shortcut the game creates will no longer work since you overwrote the Sims.exe file.

In The Sims folder and right click on the Sims.exe file and chooseCreate a shortcut and it will probably ask you create it on the desktop or another location of your choosing and it should already be named) Sims.exe - Shortcut
  5. (Optional) Run in window mode to fix any problems with aspect rations (stretched out game). Once the shortcut is created, right click on it and choose Properties

Click on the Shortcut tab. In the Target: line after the Sims.exe" window

    Add:
    -w -r:1024x768

    for example:
    Target: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Maxis\The Sims\Sims.exe" -w -r:1024x768
    and choose Run: Maximized

Note: Another option would be -w -r:800x600 for a smaller resolution monitor, but those are rare now.
  6. Click on the Compatibility Tab In the Compatibility Mode Box,

Check the Box that says Run this program in compatiblity mode for Choose Windows XP (Service Pack 2)

In the settings box, Check the Reduce color mode and drop that down to 16-bit (65335) color

Check the Run this program as an administator then click the Change settings for all users button and hit OK
  7. Now try to run it Click Register Later, as I don't believe the game can be registered anymore anyway.

If it does not run for some reason, you can try to change the Service Pack 2 to 3, but 2 is what most people use.
  8. (optional) Another thing I also do is go the
C:\Program Files (x86)\Maxis\ folder and right click on the The Sims folder
    Choose Properties
    Security > Edit button

Find the line that starts with Users
Check all the boxes except Special Permissions.

This process changes permissions on all file in folder and may take several minutes to run This may save some headache later when creating new neighborhoods and installing CC. Windows 10 permissions are a real pain for the home user.
